The Lords of the Cremation Grounds are the protectors of the large cremation grounds situated on the edges of Mount Sumeru.

On the external edges of a symbolic mandala where the assembly of the secret tantric deties are residing, there are eight large cremation grounds. Numerous protectors of the religion who are bound by an oath live in these cremation grounds.

When the Bodhisatava Manjusiri (Jampelyang) who represents the Wisdom of all the Buddhas takes on the appearance of the terrifying Lord of Death, he becomes the Lord (Je) of the Dead (Shin) and thus is called Shinje. He is the ruler of the three worlds, which he protects. He possesses a wrathful buffalo face.
